It was back in the early 1980s when this happened, long before I ever set foot in the film industry. His debut film, Pallavi annu Pallavi, premiered in 1983. Mount Ragan: A Silent Symphony, his 1986 Tamil film, proved he was a skilled director.
Mani Ratnam Career
He and his close buddy Ravi Shankar, the son of director B. R. Panthulu, were working on the first Kannada film at the time. Subsequently, Mani Ratnam enlisted the aid of Raman, the son of filmmaker S. Balachander, and Ravi Shankar to complete his script. He left his consulting position to devote full time to the film, but the project stalled before it was completed.
He had always dreamed of making movies, but the output in Tamil cinema left him unsatisfied. He felt like he was in a dream while seeing films by P. Bharathiraja (16 Vayathinile), K. Balachander (Apoorva Raagangal), J. Mahendran (Mullum Malarum), and Uthiripookkal (1979). He was friends with other aspiring actors including P. C. Sreeram, Santhana Bharathi, and P. Vasu.
He wrote Pallavi’s screenplay. To make his movie, Anu Pallavi and his uncle Krishnamurthy agreed to all of his terms. His debut film, which he directed, was seen by notables including Balu Mahendra, B. Lenin, Thotta Tharani, and Ilaiyaraaja. The government of Karnataka, India, honoured him for his contributions to this film with an award in 1983. Award given for “Best Screenplay.” Director N. G. John (a Malayalam film producer) was impressed enough with his work to urge him to helm the film Unaru (1984). In 1985, Sathya Jyothi Films gave G. Thyagarajan the chance to direct Pagal Nilavu, a movie with Murali and Revathi.
Mouna Ragam, Agni Natchathiram, Anjali, Roja, Dil Se (Hindi), O Kadhal Kanmani, and many others were among the many films he directed in Tamil and Hindi in the years that followed. Three Bollywood Filmfare Awards and six Filmfare Awards South are just a few of the accolades he’s received for his film career. Former Tamil film actress Suhasini is now married to director Maniratnam. They tied the knot in 1988 and have a son named Nandan Maniratnam.
